Non-Simple Simplicity

As one of the leading figures of “Italian design”, Enzo Mari’s “iconic” Tonietta chair, that has an important place in world design history, clearly shows the difference between simple and simplicity. Designed as a modern and industrialized interpretation of the “Thonet” chair, Tonietta represents a minimalist and radical way of thinking like many of Mari’s other designs.

Italian designer Enzo Mari who passed away recently, has focused on simplicity and minimalism in his 60 years of professional life and pursued an approach of design that is accessible to “everyone”. The world of design farewells Mari with an exhibition curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, one of the most prominent names in international art and culture scene. The exhibition in Triennale di Milano is based on the dialogues between Obrist and Mari that spanned years. The show, which includes more than 200 objects designed by Mari, can be seen until April 18, 2021. So, Enzo Mari is just one of the many reasons to be in Milan this spring.
